evelgal, to answer your question, the characters are almost all gay, however almost all the actors are straight.
After seeing the play on Saturday Evening I have to say that overall it was a great production. Two minor points of interest tho.
1) There didnt appear to be any chemistry between Evan and David specifically on Evan's part as it almost seemed like he was straight.
2) On a few occasions I also noticed that the actors were messing up their lines which I would think after doing two previous shows they would have this down to a science. As well also noticed that the bag Evan orginally brought out in the first scene mysteriously changed into the same backpack that Sean had. Minor details like that do not go un-noticed.
I would definitely be interested in seeing a pre-quel of sorts along the lines of Evan's coming of age and the realization he is gay.
